One slow drain or several backups?

You don’t need to identify the cause. Start with what happens when you use the fixture.

Shallow water pooled around an open bathroom sink drain.

Water drains slowly

Water pools in a sink, tub or shower before gradually clearing. Note when it started and whether it happens every time.

Standing water covers a shower floor drain behind a dry threshold.

Water won’t drain

Standing water remains in one fixture or rises toward the rim. Stop using that fixture rather than adding more water to test it.

The clog keeps returning

A drain clears temporarily, then slows or blocks again. Mention previous attempts to clear it, including any products used.

Several fixtures back up

Multiple backed-up drains or water rising in another fixture may point beyond a single clog. Stop water use and choose sewer help for a more focused request.

Stop overflow. Don’t mix chemicals.

Stop using an overflowing sink, tub or shower. Keep others from running water into it, and don’t keep testing a blocked drain by adding more water.

Never mix drain chemicals or add another cleaner to a drain that already contains a product. Tell the provider what you used and when; keep the product name available if you can do so safely.

Avoid contact with backed-up wastewater. If sewage is present or several fixtures are backing up, stop water use and request sewer backup help instead.
